Vitamin D and your health.

It is becoming increasingly clear that Vitamin D is important to very many aspects of your health. It has been known for a long time that Vitamin D is important to maintaining the health of your bones. More recent research is showing that Vitamin D is important in several types of cancer, diabetes, hypertension, depression, chronic pain, muscle disease and many more conditions.

If you are receiving treatment for any of the conditions mentioned above you need to be sure you are not deficient in Vitamin D. At your next visit ask your doctor about a blood test to check your Vitamin D level.

If your Vitamin D level is low you may be given a prescription for a high dose Vitamin D (ergocalciferol) that you will take twice a week for 6 - 8 week. Then you will need a repeat test to see if your level has improved to a healthy range. When your Vitamin D level is in a healthy range you will need to take a Vitamin D supplement (OTC or nonprescription) of 1000 unit a day to maintain a healthy Vitamin D.

Some people are at higher risk of having low Vitamin D.
