Food Diary

What is a food diary?

A food diary is a log of everything you eat or drink.  It is where you can record the times and places you eat as well as your feelings when you eat.

How can a food diary help?

You know that what you eat will affect your blood sugar, but do you really know what you are eating?  You must know what you are eating now before you can even try to change.  Here is a food diary page you can use.

How do I keep a food diary?

To start you need to decide which days you are going to record your food.  It can be useful to do every day at the start.  Get a notebook and put these headings at the top.

Time / Place / Thoughts or Feelings / Food and How Prepared / Amount

It is best to record the food before you eat.  If you wait till the evening or next day you will not be as accurate.  Record even snacks.

When you record your thoughts and feelings, consider these examples:

  • I was hungry.
  • I was in a hurry.
  • I was stressed.
  • Not hungry, but time to eat.
  • The food was good.

What do I do with the food diary?

Use it to understand what you eat as well as why you eat.  Bring it with you to your doctor visits.
